Make pompoms out of recycled shopping bags --it only takes a few minutes. Don’t worry if there is writing on the bags--it doesn’t really show.

Spread out a plastic shopping bag.

Cut off both handles.

Cut off the bottom seam. Do not throw away these pieces.

Spread out the folds on both sides.

Cut strips on both sides. Leave at least 2 inches in the middle that is not cut. Cutting can be frustrating for some children, so be prepared to step in and help--it will be no fun if it takes 30 minutes to cut the strips. It won’t take an adult more than 5 or 10 min.

Tie one of the handles into a loop for the handle.

Put the bottom seam strip through the hole of the handle loop.

Gather the middle uncut part of the bag and tie it in the middle with the bottom seam of the bag.  I used a different color of bag for these parts to make them easier to see and distinguish from the rest of the pom-pom. String will work fine for this as well.

Tie in a double knot.

Spread all the strips so they are going to one side.

Tie the second handle strip around the bottom of the strips right above the handle.

The finished pom-pom.

Make a two-color pom-pom with 2 different colors of plastic grocery bags.

Follow the instructions as described above.

If the strips are not even trim the ends with scissors.

Hold the handle to shake and cheer.
