Anyone raising children in a country that is different from their passport country, face a challenge that no one else faces--how to help their children love both their adopted country and their passport country. Our children naturally feel most comfortable in the country they know best. Helping them feel as comfortable in their less familiar passport country can be tricky. Using celebrations and traditions unique to the passport country can be a fun way to help strengthen the bond, that feeling of belonging, with their passport country. Done well, it can be a good chance to compare the differences between the two, celebrate the good points of both, and feel the freedom to express frustration with certain aspects of both. This will not make them flag waving patriots, but then, that’s not our goal.
