Star Puzzle Scorer

  1. 1.Cut out a large paper star for each team. (see instructions below.) Use these as is, or use the paper star as a pattern to cut stars out of foam, felt, sheet magnet, or cardboard. Use different colors for each team so you don’t accidentally give extra pieces to either team. Cut up each star into a puzzle--diamonds for the easiest challenge, and triangles for a harder challenge. You will need 5 question for each team if using diamond shapes, and 10 questions for each team if using triangles.

  2. 2.Give a piece of star for each correct answer.

  3. 3. After all the questions have been answered, tell the teams that they must put the pieces together into a star shape as the final challenge to win the game. (Don’t show them how they fit together ahead of time, or it won’t be a challenge!) Of course, if they didn’t answer all the questions correctly, then they will be missing one or more pieces.

If you use A4 paper you will need to cut off two centimeters off the end of the paper.

If you are using U.S. letter sized paper (8 1/2 x 11), use as is.

Fold the paper in half (“hamburger fold,” not “hotdog fold”)

Fold left corner of the folded edge so it comes to the middle of the right side.

Fold the bottom layer onto the top layer.

Fold the left side over the triangle.

Cut the remaining triangle at an angle. The sharper the angle, the “pointier” the star will be. The part held by the left hand is the part that is the star. Open it one fold to make sure you didn’t cut too far up, since the inside folds are not as tall as the outside. If you missed some layers, fold it back up and cut the angle a little shorter (closer to the point.)

Unfold to reveal a star. This wastes a lot of paper, so you may want to make a pattern out of copier paper or newspaper, then cut the more expensive colored paper using this pattern. If you want a smaller star, cut closer to the point, or start with a smaller rectangle.
