Cut  strips from 2 colors of paper:

  1. 1.One long strip for the outline the width of the paper and 1/2 inch to 1 inch wide

  2. 2.One long strip in a contrasting color

  3. 3.One short strip for the ”hanger”

  4. 4.Three short strips for the curls

Roll one end of a short strip around a skewer, toothpick or nail. Repeat for a total of 3 curls.

Glass Christmas balls are beautiful but breakable. These paper decorations imitate the glass ones but use techniques reminiscent of quilling to make the designs.

Fold the contrasting long strip to fit inside the large ring. Glue in place.

Glue the 3 curls in the strip in the middle of the big ring. Over time row with the curls will droop some, but that is o.k.--it will make it look like the circle is a sphere.

Glue the long strip in a ring or loop. Glue a short strip in a small ring. Glue the small ring to the top of the large ring.

These designs look intricate, but really they are just a lot of paper rings combined.

Cut  strips from 2 colors of paper:

  1. 1.One long strip for the outline of the “ball”

  2. 2.Two strips slightly longer than the diameter of the big ring.

  3. 3.One short strip for the ”hanger”

  4. 4.Six short strips for the curls

Roll BOTH ends of a short strip around a skewer, toothpick or nail. Repeat for a total of 6 double curls. If a curl is too tight, unroll the curl with your fingers, then re-roll it with your fingers to get the desired curl. Each shape looks a bit like a very curly letter “C.”

Cut the 2 medium strips slightly longer than the diameter of the big ring. Fold the ends so they fit inside the ring. Glue them together, but not the folded tabs at the end. Glue the tabs to the middle of the ring.

Glue 3 double curled strips on the top of the middle strip, and 3 more on the bottom of the middle strip.

Glue the long strip in a ring or loop to form the “ball”. Glue a short strip in a small ring for the “hanger.” Glue the small ring to the top of the large ring.

Cut longer strips in one color, and shorter strips in another color. Glue them inside the big ring.

Cut short and long strips in 2 different colors of paper.

Glue a long strip in a ring or loop to form the “ball”. Glue a short strip in a small ring for the “hanger.” Glue the small ring to the top of the large ring.

Curl one or both ends of each strip around a skewer, toothpick or nail. Glue the curled strips to the inside of the big ring.

Choose 2 colors of paper to make these Christmas “balls.” If you have access to a paper cutter, it will be easier to cut the strips of paper. If not use notebook paper as guidelines to cut several sheets at once.

Cut 3 strips slightly longer than the diameter of the large ring. Glue them vertically inside the ring. The middle strip should be straight, but the 2 sides should gently curve.

Cut 22 short strips and glue them into tiny rings. Flatten all 22 small rings, then glue them to the 2 curved middle strips. You may need few more or less, depending on the sizes you make all the parts.

NOTE: If you plan for a classroom of kids to make these, cut out strips of paper with a paper cutter ahead of time, then in class, all the kids have to do is fold and glue them. If you don’t have a paper cutter, use lined notebook paper as a guide, but cut on every other line rather than every line, since the strips would be too narrow if you cut every line. Save time by cutting 3-4 sheets of paper at a time with the same effort as cutting one. You do need a good pair of scissors to do this. The sheets of paper do tend to slide, so readjust the sheets after every few cuts.
