Open a paper napkin all the way so it is a large square. Note: if you do not have colored napkins, stack 3-4 sheets of colored tissue paper for each flower so you can have layers of petals. Cut the paper into 30 cm. squares. Start folding as in the step shown below.
Fold it in half, but at an angle so there are 4 points across the top.
Separate the layers of the first corner, and tuck the point of each layer between itself and the next layer so they look like curled petals.
How to make “rose”napkins (serviettes)
How to make napkin into a pocket silverware holder
Start with the folded napkin--paper or cloth. Make sure the loose corners are all in the top right hand corner. Fold the top layer down about an inch (2 cm) and then fold it again.
Keep folding until the top layer goes from corner to corner. Next, fold the next layer of the top right corner twice, so that there are two diagonal tucks running from top left corner to bottom right corner.
Fold the right side to the back, and put silverware in each “pocket.” This is a very flimsy pocket, so it is best to put the folded napkin on the table or plate, then slide the silverware in last; if you put the silverware into the napkin before you move it in place, it may fall out, and you will have to fold the napkin again.
Fold the bottom up so that it comes almost to the points.
Fold the right end down into a triangle to form the central petal.
Tuck the end of the napkin so the petals of the last corner slant toward the bottom of the flower.
Fasten the back with wire (such as twist-ties) or thread.
Coil these petals (tucked corners) around the initial triangle.
Gather the bottom folded edge until you come to a corner.
Each time you come to a corner, separate the layers of the corner, and tuck the points under to make them look like curled petals.
Each finished rose looks a little bit different. Don’t worry if yours doesn’t look perfect--mine don’t either! It is the over all impression that people will see.
