Big spaces need big decorations, which usually cost a lot of money (or look really tacky!) The dollar store can come to the rescue with giant felt stockings. One stocking might look a little lost, but a row of 3 fills the space nicely. Fill them with empty plastic shopping bags, and the stuffing doesn’t cost a thing! You could even put a few toys peeking out of the top--just make sure the loops are strong, or you may end up with the stockings on the floor, and if there are dogs around, the toys might get chewed up! If you can’t find inexpensive big stockings, you can sew or glue some fairly quickly. Another decorative touch is to pin some holly to the tops of the stockings.

Ribbon is another inexpensive way to add lots of splashes of red--on the swag above the doors, and on the bottoms of the light and flower basket. If your door has a lot of direct sunlight, fresh greenery is going to go brown very quickly. If it is in the shade, it can last for months. Artificial swags can be an inexpensive alternative. If you add fake holly to a fir swag, it adds bits of red, and makes it more interesting. Pinecones can be added as well.

A flower basket can make an interesting alternative to a wreath. If you get a real Christmas tree, you can use trimmed branches to fill the basket, or trim trees and branches from the yard. If these are not available. use artificial branches. Whether you use real or artificial branches, you can use an artificial swag to fill the basket and hide the ends of the branches.

Giant candy canes are sold at some dollar stores, which keeps this a really inexpensive decoration.  The container needs to be quite heavy to keep it from toppling, especially if it gets windy. If you don’t have a heavy container, you can fill a light container with rocks, then cover them with pinecones. The trio of candy canes, bow, and greenery, can be a versatile decoration--it can be a wreath alternative for the front door, a wall decoration, or decorate each post along a railing
