Baby and star, and gifts---Use for teaching about the birth of Christ

A doll can be useful in telling the story of Jesus’ birth. For young children, you can use a star to lead them around lots of room, or outside until the star leads them to the baby.

This star was a wand sold at a hundred yen store. You can make one out of gold or silver paper, too.

For the ultimate nativity set, make them out of cookies and display before eating.

These fish and fake bread were purchased at a hundred yen store. If you can’t find any, you can make both out of air-drying clay such as Hearty (Karui Kaminendo)

Buy a basket at a hundred yen store that is just the right size for a “Paul” Bible action figure to be lowered down a wall

Use a dollar store ship, or a hundred yen store ship to move along a map drawn on a sheet, then mark Paul’s 4 missionary trips with different colors of tape or yarn.

Have 3 of the children carry gifts, and when they “find” the baby Jesus, present them to the “baby Jesus.” Ask the children what they think God would like them to give Jesus this year (obey their parents, etc.) If the children are old enough to write, ask them to write something, then lay it in front of the baby as a symbol of what they will do.

However, it would be WAY more fun to have 5 dinner rolls and 2 dried fish, or fish sticks, and really break them up, and see if the whole class can eat some. Then ask them if they are full. Be sure to have a stack of baskets to pick up the leftovers, (of course there won’t be any) to drive home the fact of how amazing this miracle was.

Make a miniature tent out of cardboard box covered with a placemat or kitchen towel. Use a pencil or disposable chopsticks for a tent pole.

When teaching about Jesus healing the blind man, let them pair up and take turns being blindfolded and being led around the room by anther child, or have some food that they can try to eat with a fork (or chopsticks.) Make them guess what they have eaten. It’s harder than it sounds!

For telling the story about Zacchaeus, buy a wooden tree for a Bible action figure to climb and sit in, or make one out of cardboard. Or make a tree out of green and brown paper and fasten to a wall or bulletin board. Buy a monkey climbing toy at a hundred yen store and paste a picture of a man’s face over the monkey face. Let the children take turns making Zacchaeus climb the tree. They could each make their own climbing Zacchaeus during craft time.

For teaching about Jesus calming the storm, use a spray bottle to spray the children. This can be quite shocking to the children, so have a towel handy for any that can’t cope with being a little damp.

Buy a snake at a dollar store or hundred yen store to use when Paul and the others were shipwrecked on the island and some were bitten by poisonous snakes.

For telling the story about Zacchaeus, make your own tree like this out of cardboard or wood.
