Stand-up or Magnet Card

Scatter free standing hearts all over your house--next to a picture frame, next to the phone, or next to the cookie jar. Or glue a magnet on the back, and you have decorations for the refrigerator. Cut the hearts out of foam sheets to make them more durable and waterproof, so you can put them next to the bathroom or kitchen sink.

  1. 1.Cut out different sizes and colors of hearts. If you want patterned paper, use origami, wrapping paper, or scrapbooking paper, or use stamps to create your own patterned paper. Save time by stacking 3 or 4 sheets of paper to cut several hearts at once.

  2. 2.Glue hearts on top of hearts for more interesting designs. Glue the base heart onto thin cardboard for more durability, unless you are making it out of foam.

  3. 3.Glue magnets or paper stands to the backs of the base cards. To make a stand, cut a rectangle of paper that is about 3/4 the size of the heart--it doesn’t have to be exact--you just don’t want it to show from behind the heart.  Fold it in 2 places so that the middle is about a half inch wide (1 cm.) Glue it to the back of the heart. Trim the bottom sides of the 2 side flaps at a slight angle to make the heart tip back slightly, otherwise it will tend to fall forward. If you don’t want the stand to show, you can cut out a small section that is behind the point of the heart (see photo on left.)

  4. 4.Embellish the hearts as much as you want--with beads, lace, bows, etc.

  5. 5.Write a short message on the back of each, or use them as decorations for a blank card--fasten 2 or 3 hearts  to the front of the cards with double stick tape and write your message inside the card. Be sure to tell the recipients to remove the hearts and to use them to decorate a refrigerator or locker. Otherwise, they might not notice the hearts are magnets. For the stand-up variety, open the stands flat for mailing, and write a note to explain how to make them stand up.

How to make an envelope

Optional: Make extra magnet hearts to play tic-tac-toe on the refrigerator with your kids when they wander into the kitchen. Draw a grid on a piece of paper and use different colors of hearts in place of x’s and o’x.  Use a magnet or tape to hold the paper on the refrigerator. Winner gets a chocolate kiss or a real kiss. In the mean time, its a Valentine decoration for your kitchen!

Clothesline Card

Hang your message from a string or ribbon with tiny clothespins. If you can’t find clothespins, use multicolored paperclips, or simply punch holes in the tops of the letters and hearts and thread the ribbon through.

1. Cut out different sizes and colors of hearts. If you want patterned paper, use origami, wrapping paper, or scrapbooking paper, or use stamps to create your own patterned paper. Save time by stacking 3 or 4 sheets of paper to cut several hearts at once.

2. To make letters, print out the message in a large font on your computer. Use them as patterns to cut out the letters you need.

  1. 3.Glue smaller hearts on top of the base hearts.

  2. 4.Depending on the size of the hearts, you may have to write your message on a separate sheet of paper.

  3. 5. If you want to mail these, remove the clothespins or paperclips so the hearts don’t get crumpled in route, and be sure to write a note of how to hang them.

These decorations are short enough to fit on doors,  refrigerator, cupboards, bathroom mirror, or bunk beds. But don’t be limited to the word “love”--there are all kinds of phrases that might be fun to decorate with--”I am wild about you,” or “I think the world of you,” or “I have a soft spot for you,” or “I am hooked on you,” or “I get a kick out of you.” “Happy Valentine’s Day” is always a good option, too.
