Marshmallow flowers
These flowers are inspired by dogwood blossoms. Icing forms the branches, leaves and flower centers. 100 yen stores sell decorator bags and sets of 3 decorating tips. Use a plain tip or simply cut off the tip of the bag to “draw” the branches, use a sunburst tip for the flower centers, and a sort of figure 8 shape to form the leaves. Use green food coloring or mix blue and yellow food coloring to color the icing. Actually, a tiny bit of red food coloring can make it a more realistic green color.
To form the petals, use kitchen scissors to cut a notch down the side of each marshmallow (shown on the handle of the bowl.) Then slice each marshmallow into 3 or 6 slices, keeping the notch at the tip of each petal. If the scissors get sticky, dip them in cornstarch. Make the notch stand out more and look more realistic by rubbing cinnamon or cocoa in the notch.
You don’t have to cut a notch for daisies--just cut the marshmallows with kitchen scissors (sold at hundred yen stores) and put yellow m’n’m’s in the center of each flower. Dip scissors in cornstarch if they get sticky.
You can get a slightly different look by varying the colors of m’n’m’s or marshmallows. You can dip the sliced marshmallows in colored sugar or dry jello powder to color the petals of the flowers.
You can put one marshmallow flower on the top of each cupcake instead of a cross cake.
