Many American churches decorate the sanctuary with lilies for Easter. Some smaller churches cover the cost of buying the lilies by asking for donations, then the people who donated the money can take the lilies home with them after Easter Sunday.

Here is another example of a mass of lilies to decorate the front of the church.

Here a simple display adorns the communion table: an open Bible on a stand, 2 candles, and a a goblet

Some churches cover a cross with fresh flowers to celebrate jesus’ resurrection, and the new life we have in Him. Since cut flowers die fairly quickly, this is a decoration that will only last for one Sunday. Although this cross was decorated ahead of time, some churches encourage church members to bring their own flowers and put them on the cross as they come to church Easter morning. Some of these crosses are so large that a ladder is needed for people to reach the top. To make a cross like the one shown above, use chicken wire to hold blocks of oasis onto the cross frame. Be sure to soak the oasis (foam blocks used for arranging flowers) for at least 30 minutes so the water soaks through the whole block. Otherwise, there might be patches of dry foam that would cause the flowers to wilt quickly. Poke flowers and greenery between the holes in the chicken wire until the whole cross is covered.

This church is decorated in a profusion of flowers. The pulpit has a garland of leaves around it with a swath of flowers in the front.

A massive bouquet of flowers adorns the front of each of the 3 balconies. Even though they are large arrangements, the size of the church makes them hard to see until you are fairly close.

Covered candles decorate the end of each pew.

Here is another example of the front of the church filled with lilies and white candles.

This small chapel has lilies and greenery adorning the front.

The back of the tiny chapel has a garden of potted plants, and a water fountain just for the Easter Season.

More potted plants on the opposite side add to the secluded garden feel of the chapel.

Flower arranging tips

  1. 1.Soak oasis  for a minimum of 30 minutes to make sure the water is soaked all the way through. If there are any dry spots, the flowers will die quickly. (oasis is the green foam used for arranging fresh flowers that also provides the moisture needed by the flowers.)

  2. 2.Fasten oasis blocks to a base (such as a cross) with chicken wire so the flowers can be pushed through the holes. Fill the arrangement with enough leaves and flowers to cover the chicken wire. Sometimes dollar stores sell “cages” to put blocks of oasis in for medium sized arrangements.

  3. 3.Keep flowers in a vase fresh longer by dropping copper into the water  and adding a little sugar to the water. (the copper can be coins such as pennies, or copper cuffs for keeping slugs off plants)

  4. 4.Make a frog (frame for holding flowers in place in a large vase) with a bush of artificial flowers from a dollar store. Just pull off the flowers, and stick the stem in--it will blend right in with the real stems, and will keep the real flowers from flopping around.
