A kitchen is not much fun without things to go in it! Learn how to make dishes, pots and pans, and food.
Frypan
The metal liners on tea light candles make great little pots and pans for a doll house. Use them as is for sauce pans. Pull the candle out of the liner by pulling on the wick.
The metal is very soft, so you can fold fold the sides down to make a shallower pan. A bead makes a good knob for a lid. Stiff black paper makes a handle for the pan.
Bottle caps can be used to make pans as well. If the edge has sharp bits, be sure to cut them off with tinsnips or file them smooth with a file.
Press the edge to the inside of the tea light holder.
Keep pressing the whole way around.
Use your fingers to press out wrinkles as well as you can.
If you want the bottom of the pan to be smooth, use the round end of a marker lid, or the rubber end of pliers handles to smooth out the bottom.
Roll the black paper around a toothpick or skewer to form the handle. Glue it so it doesn’t come unrolled.
Glue the rounded end to the inside of the pan, and the rolled up end to the outside of the pan.
Lids
Lids are optional, but it does make the pans look more real.
Use another tea light case to make the lid. Press the side in with one hand while using the other hand to straighten out the top edge.
It gets pretty wrinkled, but don’t worry about that.
It ends up looking a bit like a shower cap!
Use pliers to finish squeezing the wrest of the wrinkles out of the edge of the lid as well as the lip.
Press the inside of the lid smooth and rounded with the plier handle.
Glue a bead on the top of the lid for a handle. You may need to fiddle with the lip a bit to make the lid snap down into the pan. If it is too tight, bend it in, and if it is too loose, bend it out a bit so that the lid fits snuggly into the pan.
Plates or Dishes
Cut out small circles from white plastic containers or stiff paper such as poster board. Use small bottle caps to draw circles. The plastic container should be soft enough to cut with scissors, though it may be easier to get a hole started with a craft knife. The one shown here is milk bottle. If you want the plates to have a rim, bend the edges up with your fingernails or with a pair of tweezers. They won’t be perfect, but that’s o.k.. You can make salad plates, dinner plates, and platters, if you can find bottle caps or pen caps the right size.
Food Packages for the cupboards
The easiest way to make packages with your favorite products is to cut rectangles of styrofoam, cover with paper, then glue on pictures cut off of grocery store flyers or advertisements.
To make bags of food, cover advertisement photos with wide clear packing tape. Cut out the photo 3 times as big as the picture (like the dotted line around the photo above). Roll the tape-covered photo into a tube and tape the ends. Fill the tube with crumpled up tissue or toilet paper and staple or tape both open ends of the tube. Make sure the picture is on the front of the package when you tape the ends shut.
Another way to make boxes of food is to cut out cartons out of stiff paper (card stock) and glue the advertisement pictures to these tiny boxes.
