Fold a paper or cloth napkin in accordion folds. Tie a narrow red ribbon in a bow around the middle, then arrange the ends in graceful curls. The white folds echo the folded cloth left in the empty tomb, and the red ribbon points to the blood that was shed for salvation.

Keep fresh flowers alive with a tube and rubber top, available at florists. If you can’t get one of these, wrap the ends of the stems in a wet paper towel, and then some tinfoil or plastic wrap. Hide this in the folds of the fabric. The flowers will not last long this way, so as soon as the meal or event is over, put the flowers back in water.

To make this centerpiece, start with a white table cloth. Next drape a purple scarf or table runner down the middle of the table. Stand the crown of thorns in the middle of the purple cloth and drape a white cloth (pillow case) through the middle of the crown of thorns. This will keep the crown of thorns standing. Drape some narrow red ribbon across all of this. Add some flowers to the arrangement, hiding the stems under the fabric.

Each part of this centerpiece is filled with the meaning of Easter. The crown of thorns represents Jesus’ death on the cross. The red ribbon stands for the blood that was shed for the salvation from sin. The flowers symbolize the new life found in Christ. The white cloth points to the resurrection that proved the power of Jesus and triumph over death. The purple cloth reminds us of the purple robe that was used to mock Jesus during his trial, and yet rightly proclaimed the royalty of the King of Kings.

“He is risen!!” Those unbelievable, inconceivable  words mean nothing if you have not seen the darkest day in history when the savior of the world was crucified. These decorations try to represent the awfulness of Good Friday along with the sheer joy and incredible jubilation of the resurrection. Let us celebrate Easter in a way that is appropriate for such a GLORIOUS DAY!!
